December Fishing on Spring Creek...

This past weekend a few of us headed to Central PA for a little winter weather trout fishing. We arrived at state college late morning on Friday December 11th to below freezing temps with the wind chill, right around -3 degrees. We decided to stop at the local fly shop to pick up some tying materials and try to kill a little more time before we hit the stream. We were on the water just a little before noon and within the first five minutes we were into fish! The rest of that afternoon went as well as it could have for the conditions, between three of us there were 22 fish brought to the net. Most fish were caught on size #16 or #18 olive scud and a few were picked up on small single egg patterns being the spawn had just finished about a week earlier. The Second morning we woke to warmer temps, 30 degrees but plenty of sunshine made it feel like a heat wave compared to the day before. Fishing was consistent most of the day with most of the action coming from 2pm to almost dark. We were able to land 20 fish that day between the three of us with a few that got off the line before they reached the net. The same flies as the day before still were the ones that produced all hook ups, with a few more landed on the small egg patterns the second day! All in all it was another great trip to Central PA and I don't think you could ask for better fishing in mid December for wild trout...
